Resilient Coral Reefs, Resilient Communities
Author: Palawan Council for Sustainable Development
Aiming to build capacity and develop solutions that ensure the long-term survival of climate refuge coral reef ecosystems by conserving biodiversity and supporting blue economies and communities, the ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ฎ๐ (๐๐๐): ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐๐ฌ, ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐๐๐ญ was officially launched on May 25, 2026 in the Palawan Biosphere Reserve.
The Coral Reef Rescue Project is a ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ (๐๐๐ -๐), ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ -๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฒ, and ๐๐ฑ๐๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ (๐๐), in partnership with leading conservation organizations across six participating countries–the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) in the ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ; Wildlife Conservation Society in ๐ ๐ข๐ฃ๐ข, ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ, and ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ; Yayasan Reef Check in ๐๐ง๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ข๐; and the Marine Parks and Reserves Unit in ๐๐๐ง๐ณ๐๐ง๐ข๐.
As the project's National Technical Facilitator and sub-executing partner, PCSD will lead the implementation in Palawan Biosphere Reserve. The project will cover climate refuge coral reef ecosystems–reefs that are less vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and are critical to future global reef recovery–in the Municipalities of El Nido, Taytay and Dumaran.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the network of Marine Protected Areas under the SEP Environmentally Critical Areas Network (ECAN), enhance the protection of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, support sustainable coastal livelihoods, and build the capacity of local governments, communities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders engaged in coastal resource management.
PCSDS Deputy Executive Director Dir. Niño Rey C. Estoya, MNSA, CESE opened the event, followed by an inspirational message from DENR Undersecretary for Policy, Planning and International Affairs Atty. Jonah R. Leones. Ms. Jen Dunn, Project Manager of the GEF Coral Reef Rescue Project from UQ International Development, University of Queensland, presented the global context of the initiative, highlighting how international scientists and conservation experts identified climate refuge reefs through global research and mapping efforts. She emphasized the importance of protecting these resilient reefs as a “seed bank” for future coral reef recovery amid the growing impacts of climate change.
To symbolize their shared commitment, representatives from ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐-๐ ๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฐ๐๐ง, the ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฐ๐๐ง, ๐๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐๐จ, ๐๐๐ฒ๐ญ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐๐ง, and ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ง๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ค๐๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ, joined the Ceremonial Signing of the Wall of Commitment, reaffirming their collective responsibility to conserve Palawan’s coral reef ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.
The Coral Reef Rescue Project marks an important step toward securing the future of climate-resilient coral reefs in Palawan while contributing to a broader global effort to safeguard the world’s most resilient reef ecosystems for generations to come.
About the Coral Reef Rescue Project
The Coral Reef Rescue Project is a US$7M initiative funded by theโฏGlobal Environment Facilityโฏto build capacity and solutions that ensure the long-term survival of climate refuge coral reef ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. The project is implemented byโฏthe World Wildlife Fundโฏand executed by The University of Queensland in partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society (Fiji, Madagascar, Solomon Islands), Yayasan Reef Check Indonesia, Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, Philippines and Marine Parks and Reserves Unit, Tanzania.
Free Online Resources for Coral Reef Conservation
Complementing the work in each country, the GEF 7 CRR project has released free online courses on coral reefs. These includeโฏCoral Reefs: Introduction to Challenges and Solutions,โฏCoral Reefs: Sustainable Blue Economy,โฏCoral Reefs: Data and Monitoring,โฏCoral Reefs: Climate Resilient Communities. These free online courses are available in English, Bahasa Indonesian, and French.
Alongside these courses, a new online decision support tool was created:โฏCoral Reef Rescue Portal. This brings together over 70 existing coral reef datasets and resources in one easy-to-use, searchable platform.
