Indonesia - Strengthening coral reef management through collaborative capacity building

Reef Check Indonesia brings stakeholders together to form a Capacity Building and Awareness Working Group aiming to enhance coral reef management and integrate local knowledge with scientific practices.

At a meeting at Novotel Cikini Hotel, Central Jakarta on the 25-26 June 2024, 28 participants came together to strengthen coral reef management in Indonesia under the GEF7 CRR project, focusing on capacity building and awareness. Participants included representatives from central ministries, NGOs, academics, and local communities, including indigenous groups. The key outcomes included forming a Capacity Building and Awareness Working Group, identifying gaps in current practices, and emphasizing the importance of integrating local wisdom with scientific approaches. The discussions also highlighted the role of women in coral reef conservation and the need for improved access to resources and support for effective capacity building at the community level.
